Start of the FY27 fiscal year
The Fiscal Year for the Commonwealth runs from July 1-June 30 of the following year. The Governor has 10 days to review the budget and take action to either approve or veto the budget. The Governor may approve or veto the entire budget, veto or reduce specific line items, veto outside sections (non-budgetary policies) or submit changes as an amendment to the budget for further consideration by the Legislature.
The Legislature must vote on the Governor’s vetoes or amendments with a recorded twothirds majority vote. The Legislature has until the end of the calendar year to take any actions on the Governor’s changes. Without action by the legislature, these sections do not become law.
Following any legislative overrides to the Governor’s actions, the budget is finalized and is commonly referred to as the “General Appropriations Act” for the upcoming fiscal year.
